1/14/06 - Khao Yai National Park to Khon Kaen
After leaving the park this morning we visited the ceramic-making village, Ban Dan Kiang where we watched pot throwing, glazing and firing. The huge pots were exciting to the Elder trekkers, but all settled for choosing from a huge variety of inexpensive, light weight ceramic jewelry and gewgaws.
Next, when we visited the site of Khmer ruins at Prasart Phi Mai, we discovered it was “Children’s Day” in Thailand. Kids swarmed over the huge site and played games on grassy areas as we walked through this beautifully situated Temple ruins. We were delighted to be exploring the ruins with dozens of young Buddhist monks in training all with shaved heads, saffron robes and serious demeanors.
It was a very long drive, broken by a Thai iced coffee stop, to Khon Kaen where we stayed in the 5 star Sofitel Hotel. Rooms are luxuriously appointed and pool delightful. Dinner was the lavish buffet at the hotel, momentous because we met Pontus’ girlfriend, Poo.
