1/11/06 - River Rafts to River Kwai
After a chilly night in our cozy hut and a western ham and eggs breakfast we went ashore to visit a charming Hmong village, complete with open air school. Reboarding our long tail boats, we rode back down the river where our vans were waiting. A third van carries our luggage and our guides alternate riding in each passenger van. We are adjusting to being a bit cramped and the good Thai roads make for shorter driving days.
Today Bee rode in our van describing the Thai countryside on our way the Erawan Falls. We hiked up seven levels of waterfalls, each more spectacular than before with crystal clear water cascading over white limestone rock and forming deep pools for adventurous swimmers. The lower pools were popular with locals, monkeys and swarms of hungry catfish who agressively pummeled unwitting swimmers. Very creepy.
Lunch in Park Cafe included pad thai and renowned smoked chicken barbecue, delicious with another ice cream bar for dessert.
A short drive back to our River Kwai luxury hotel for another swim in a huge free form swimming pool. Hotel Felix has beautiful grounds with many water features, large rooms with balconies and fresh air if you don’t mind mosquitos joining you. We ate a very rich dinner in a restaurant across the river from our hotel and most of us rode back to the Felix in the vans, envious of fellow trekker, Blair, who walked back and arrived before we did.
